How can I rip a DVD on Mac? I want to convert one of my DVD discs to MP4 file on Mac so I can import into iTunes and then watch it on my iPad Air. I have never done this before. Any DVD ripping software recommended?

Step 1: Import DVD movies

Insert your movie DVD disc into optical drive and start the DVD Ripper for Mac program.

To add DVD files to the board, click the "load Disc" icon at the top bar, navigate to the folder on your hard drive containing the DVDs you want to convert to mp4, select them, and click "OK".

The program will scan the disc and display the main disc title on the screen.

Step 2: Choose "MP4" as output profile

  • Run VLC on your Mac, and insert the disc into the optical drive. If your Mac doesn't have a DVD drive, get an external optical drive and attach to your machine.
  • From File menu, click on Open Disc.

Do note that you will have to install libdvdcss library on your computer before you're trying to rip copy protected DVDs on your Mac machine. It's an open-source library designed for circumventing the Content Scramble System (CSS) which commercial DVDs make use of.

Here's how to convert DVD to MP4 with Handbrake on Mac.

  • Insert the DVD you wish to convert into Mac's DVD drive, and launch Handbrake.
  • In the pop-up dialog, select the DVD from the list and click Open. If the dialog doesn't pop up, you can click Open Source button at the upper left corner to load your DVD instead.

  • Handbrake will scan the DVD for titles, and display the main title in Title drop-down box.
  • Select the title you want to rip, and then click Add to Queue. If you want to rip multiple DVD titles to MP4 on Mac, repeat the steps.
  • Under Format drop-down menu, select MP4 File.
  • If necessary, open the Chapters tab and specify the From and To chapters that you want to rip, open Audio tab and select the audio track, open Subtitle and select language.
  • Click Browse button at the bottom right and specify where to store the resulting video.
  • Click Start to begin the ripping process.

Handbrake will now begin ripping DVD to MP4 in Mac and display a progress bar indicating a percentage of completion of the process.

Tip: The default settings in Handbrake are good enough for ripping a DVD for Mac. If you want to get more control over the conversion, you can tweak the video & audio settings and take advantage of its Preset feature.
